Product overview

It does’t matter who you are, I don’t care how much stamina and physical strength you think you’ve got, every athlete needs to replenish themselves at some point – ideally a few hours before and straight away after working out. So your probably wondering what is the best protein powder for athletes? Well enter Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Casein Protein Powder.

Personally I have Vanilla flavoured Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Casein Protein Powder, as I love Vanilla flavour the most in shakes, but there’s Chocolate and Banana flavours if your prefer. But seriously this protein shake is so smooth, hardly takes any shaking to mix it, really good flavour, and no powdery horrible aftertaste.

Now in this post I’m not going to talk about the whole supplement process that an MMA fighter should be taking like – Fish Oil, Glutamine, Arginine, Vitamin B complex and Caffeine. But I will be focusing on one of the most important supplements needed in an MMA fighter or any professional athletes diets – Casein Protein Powder.

What is Casein Protein?

If your new to Casein protein then let me give you a brief overview – Casein protein is essentially the brother to MMA_Gateway_Optimum_Nutrition_Gold_Standard_Casein Protein PowderWhey protein, Casein is designed to release much slower through the digestion system, which enables a steady release of amino acids in the bloodstream, for a prolonged rebuilding support.

This rebuilding process is not only directly after training, but also during any extended periods without any solid meals – this slow release will assist with keeping the reconstruction process going throughout the day, and can also blunt cortisol levels.

The best time to have Casein Protein, is a few hours before training to keep your BCAA levels up, which will combat fatigue during your training regimes. Also you must always have Casein straight after training, with some whey protein separately also, to maximise your bodies recovery. Then in general you should also have some during any prolonged periods of not eating between meals, and also before bed to stop muscle breakdown and support growth.

Heres a video to give you an overview of this protein –

my favourite parts of this protein

  • One of my favourite parts of this Optimum Nutrition 100% gold standard Casein protein powder, is the simple fact that I can really feel the difference to my energy levels when I have it. I can feel it boosting my energy and replenishing my muscles before and after workouts.

When I don’t have it for a few weeks, my energy levels drop, I get tired easier and generally lack energy after  a workout. So this Casein protein powder is crucial for me, and you have to ask, when some athletes use all kinds of illegal and or dangerous drugs just to improve physical characteristics and quicker recovery, why would any athlete ever need more then a healthy diet, and excellent supplement program with Casein protein? Confuses me.

  • Meal Replacement! I mean come on, if you have a crazy busy schedule, where getting an hour to sit down for a nice meal is rare – then you will love the fact that making a quick 20 second Gold Standard Casein protein shake will fill you up just the same as a meal.MMA_Gateway_Optimum_Nutrition_Gold_Standard Casein_Protein_Powder

That doesn’t mean you can just start forgetting about solid meals all together, because you still need a balanced diet, but if your ever in a tight squeeze for time, a quick Casein protein shake will give you the fuel you need. Generally I suggest having a shake in between meals anyway to support growth and stop muscle deterioration.

  • Seriously it just tastes good 🙂 I mean I have tried all kinds of protein shakes, and some of them are so bad! But have no fear, with Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Casein Protein Powder, there’s no horrible taste, no powdery chemical aftertaste, and it doesn’t take ages to mix it. I still prefer the taste of the Whey protein, but this Casein is still pretty awesome.

You can mix it with Milk, water or Milk replacements, and it will taste just as good as a milkshake from a fast food place or specialist milkshake shops, but its way more healthy! Bear in mind though that Casein protein shakes are thicker then Whey protein shakes, so bear that in mind if your not used to Casein, it can take a little getting used to.

Pros

  • You can literally fee the steady release of Amino acids throughout the day, enabling you to workout hard from sunrise to sunset.
  • While its best used with a balanced diet, and inbetween solid meals, if your in a rush then this Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Casein Protein Powder, can be used as a genuine meal substitute.MMA_Gateway_Optimum_Nutrition_Gold_Standard_Casein Protein Powder
  • Great tasting, making it easy to drink at anytime, no closing your eyes and screwing up your face, which can happen with really bad tasting protein.
  • Offers thicker, and richer tasting milkshakes then Whey Protein.
  • You can actually make ice cream with this protein powder if you like, i do it occassionally and it tastes great.
  • Makes sure there is no muscle deterioration during sleep, or at anytime of the day, and supports general growth.
  • For 1.8 KGs giving you a massive 56 servings, the price if really great!

Cons

  • It doesn’t taste as good as Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey Protein Powder in my opinion, but then it has a completely different structure, and it still tastes good.
  • A little bit more powdery then Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey Protein shakes, but i have seriously had a lot worse in my time!

Keep your body fuelled!

Ok so now you know  what Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Casein Protein Powder is, then that means you now know what is the Best Protein Powder for Athletes.

There are some more complete supplement options then this protein, and many worse, but this protein has been MMA_Gateway_Optimum_Nutrition_Gold_Standard_Casein Protein Powderpopular for years for a reason.

But don’t underestimate the importance of what I’m saying in this review – keeping your body fuelled is so important when training seriously in any athletic endeavour, whether its just as a hobby, or as a pro career. Serious training without the proper supplements will result in over exertion, a lack of energy, long time to recover, muscle deterioration, higher risk of serious injury, and even more potentially life threatening consequences!

So don’t take the risk – before you start a regime of serious training, make sure you get yourself some Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Casein Protein Powder right HERE.

Always keep a balanced diet, use safe daily supplements, and stay tuned here at the MMAgateway for more supplement product reviews in the future.

I hope you enjoyed this review, please leave some comments below if you have something to add or a question to ask, and I will always get back to you.

  1. I have always been taking whey protein for recovery for my work outs. I have read about casein a little while back but I am wondering if it is wise to take both casein and whey or should I swop whey for casein?

What will be the advantages and disadvantage (other than damage to the wallet lol) if I take both?

    • Hi Leo, yes Whey is great for quick replenishment, but Casein will distribute amino acids throughout the day. Yes mixing Whey and Casein us fine and has proven to be very effective, you will want around 40 grams Whey to 8 grams Casein.

      Thanks for your comment anyway

  2. I had heard of Casein before, I had no real idea hat it was, so thanks for the description. In my workout regime, I have always used Whey before a work out but rarely after because I thought the caffeine would leave me unable to sleep! Slower release sounds better to me.

I have tried loads of different brands, but after reading this, I may well give this brand a go.

    • Hey Mat – that’s awesome that you workout, and that you can see the benefits of Casein protein, you still should use Whey as well, but before bed and in between meals – Casein is the best protein 🙂

  3. Great review of this protein powder I read thru the whole review great in depth review. Looks like this powder is much better than the one I use so I think I may change. Do you know where I can get it without going to amazon? If not I can just order from here on your site Right?

    • Hi Keith, yes this ON 100% Gold Standard Casein Protein is literally my favourite protein, unfortunately i only have the option to buy this particular protein through Amazon at the moment, but i will be doing an article on Whey protein soon, and that will be through MMAWarehouse, UFCstore, or Ebay. Can you use any of those?

      Thnaks for your comments!

  4. Hi Marley,

A very interesting article for me, since I’m also doing sports and I’m never quite sure when and how much and which protein I should take to me. So you would recommend it so: after the workout a Whey, in the morning after getting up or in the evening before going to sleep a Casein shake, right?

    • Hi Daniel, yes Whey straight after a workout, ideally with a little Casein too, but always Casein in between meals and before bed

  5. Both my sons are built like tanks and have been weight training for some years. They look amazing and are on a healthy diet and take the Weider Protein shakes.

My wife and I both in our sixties and we do the gym three times a week. We buy the Spirulina Protein Powder .The Gold Standard Casein Protein Powder sounds like an excellent product protein powder.

    • Hi Richard, oh wow well if they are not already, it sounds like your boys are primed for some kind of athletic competition in the future.

Great job to your and your wife for being so active in your sixties as well, your an example to many people much younger then you that need to get motivated.

Weider Protein shakes are great for muscle mass building and muscle replenishment, and the Spirulina is a great option to get a bit of everything!

But Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Casein is my personal favourite 🙂 thanks for your comment!

  6. Sadly the item doesn’t deliver to Hong Kong, where I live. I’ll have a look for it in the local stores.

I’ve used a few different protein powders before. Never really thought about preferring one over the other as I’m not a real gym bunny. I primarily use it after a workout because I know my muscles will be sore for a week without extra protein.

You have a nice review there. Very informative. Thx

    • Hi Oscar, yeah thats a shame they don’t deliver to Hong Kong, hopefully you will be able to find it in your local stores, because this is my personal favourite protein.

Like you say, even if your not a “gym bunny” lol, you still need extra protein after working out to refuel your muscles quickly.

  7. Marley,

Thanks for posting. I am not a body builder by any stretch and in truth recently had gastric bypass surgery. One of the realities after surgery is the need to consume large amounts of protein while consuming small amounts of food. The end result is protein bars and protein shakes now constitute somewhere between 50-75% of my daily intake.
You may not know, but would this be a better product for me than the whey protein I currently use? Keeping in mind, I work out but more to lose and tone than body build.

    Thanks

    Eric

    • Hi Eric, well i hope you get back to full fitness asap! And Whey protein is best for quick release of amino acid replenishment after working out, while the Casein like this one, is designed for a slow release througout the day of during sleeping. I really think you should first consult your doctor, but he will probably suggest you switch to Casein!

      Thnaks for your comment!

  8. Thanks for this helpful post. My husband is always looking for a good protein powder to take when he goes to the gym. Is is gluten free do you know? That is something we are getting more interested in these days. Just wondering! Glad to know that it tastes good, as sometimes that is a hard trial and error process!

    • Hi Katie, well this will be a great protein to get for your husband, and yes all the flavours in this post are Gluten Free – in fact the only flavour that contains Gluten of Optimum Nutrition products is the cookies and cream flavour, but if you stick to Vanilla, Chocolate or Banana you will be fine.

      Thanks for your feedback!

  9. I’ve never tried taking protein powder and I’m not sure if I need it. I’m not an athlete but I’d say that the nature of my job requires me to be on my best shape and working capacity. So I’m just wondering, is this only recommended for athletes? What about people, not necessarily athletes who are “always on the go?” Active people who need to be energized all the time because of the nature of their work?

I would love to know more about the benefits of taking in protein powders, thanks!

    • Hi Alice, you don’t need to be an athlete to take Casein Protein powders like this – the Casein is a practical option for anyone that is a busy person because the slow release of amino acids will keep you energised throughout the day in between meals.

I will have a benefits of protein powders post in the future, so stay tuned for that!

      Thanks for your feedback!

  10. Very nice review. I am a huge fan of casein protein for my evening protein drink. It is great for nighttime digestion. This seems to be a great product and I may try it next time I am purchasing casein protein.

Thank you for addressing the taste. I can not drink mixes that do not taste good. I know I should be more concerned with quality but I know me and if it doesn’t taste decent, I won’t use it.

    • Hey Leroy,

i can definitely tell you know your protein, and your right Casein is great for nighttime digestion, and trust me this Optimum Nutrition one tastes better then most protein you can try, so give it a go!

Also if you want some weights to work with while your working out then try these

      Comeback again sometime bro!
