MMA – in the words of Bruce Lee – a doorway to building the best you.

MMA_Gateway_UFC_Martial Arts Female MMA fighters (1) Matthew WalshMMA – Mixed Martial Arts has a longer history then companies like the UFC or Bellator, because Dana White himself has said that modern MMA came from Bruce Lee.

The reason Mr White said this, was because the whole concept of mixing martial arts in the modern era was first adopted by Bruce Lee before anyone else.

Bruce Lee said many famous quotes, but here’s one which is the basis of this post, and will show his philosophy on fighting and life –

“I said empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water, now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now Water can flow, or it can crash – be water my friend.”

Now this quote really sums up what we are going to be focusing on in today’s post, so lets look closer –Bruce_Lee_1973_MMA Gateway UFC MartialArts

Why did Bruce Lee want to mix different martial arts in the first place? It was because he realised that in fighting and life in general learning ALL things, and only keeping whats best is crucial to be able to handle any situation and build the best version of ourselves.

In short we have to become able to adapt to any situation.

People have their judgements about MMA, many still think it is just a violent sport for thugs to go and get paid for hitting each other in the head. Now while there are some nefarious activities that happen in MMA, some fight promotions and fighters more so then others –

the reality is that MMA is simply about teaching yourself to be able to handle and excel in any situation of combat, which is the same idea that one needs to adopt in order to survive and thrive in our lives.

Life can hit you hard

MMA Gateway UFC_MartialArts_Martial_arts_master_kicks_classes_with_Status_of_Forces_Agreement_personnel_160804-M-TA471-018If you still cannot see the connection between MMA and building the best version of yourself, then let me explain further –

have you noticed in your life, that things will often seem to shock you and hit you in the face really hard? Like maybe today yesterday or tomorrow you lose your job, have an argument with your partner, or maybe a close friend or relative passes away.

This is the same thing that happens when you compete in MMA, you can be hit at any moment really hard, and if you are not prepared for this, then you will crumble and be defeated by your opponent/life.

So this is what i want you to understand, is we all get hit hard in life sometimes, but it is how we respond to these shots that will determine if we will survive the ordeal, remain stable and excel, or fall into a pit of emotions and fade away.

Don’t allow yourself to just go through life trying your hardest to avoid the worst situations without any preparation, because it is when you have not done your research and your preparation, that we are highly likely to crumble when the bell rings and a serious event is happening in your life.

Why do some MMA fighters have a criminal record?

MMA_Gateway_UFC Jiu-jitsu Back mount (1)The same reasons why anyone in life has a criminal record – lack of money, stress, undealt with mental issues etc. Yes there are certain names of some notorious MMA fighters who have had a lot of problems with crime, even after becoming a pro MMA fighter –

I’m not going to start dropping names, because you can do that on your own research, and within this post my aim is to inform people of the benefits of MMA, not focus on the negatives.

But the majority of MMA fighters, have improved themselves as martial artists and people through the sport of MMA.

Maximising your potential

Bruce_Lee_1973_MMA Gateway UFC MartialArtsTrust me when i tell you, i know many people who if it were not for MMA, they would either have spiralled into a suicidal depression, or would have been forced into a life of crime, and would likely be dead or in prison now.

In this capitalist world not everybody has the luxury of being able to go to school at Eaton, or any of the top schools in the world. But one thing is certain –

“under the sky there is only one family”

Another great Bruce Lee quote, and the reality is that no matter where you are in your life, through martial arts, as well as a process of clearing your mind of unresolved issues, you will find new limits of yourself, and how to go beyond those limits – you will support yourself to become the best version of yourself.

This in turn makes you a more beneficial member of society and a powerful person in full control of their own destiny that is also able to assist others and humanity to bloom the same way you have. So let me leave you with this thought –

If everyone in the world was training martial arts from a young age, would we have more or less conflicts in the world then we have now? Everyone is entitled to their perspective of course, but when you look closely you will realise that the discipline, honour, and bravery that develops in a person through martial arts, it is clear that the world would be a better place if everyone trained Martial arts.

I hope you enjoyed this post, any comments, questions or your own perspective on MMA and Martial Arts then post them below.
